I can't decide whether to love the iPad or loathe it. I love it because it's cool, but I loathe it because I can't do the one thing on it that is the focus of most of my time and energy: writing software. Developers get to write software *for* this cool device, but can they write software *on* this cool device? I'm ready to leave my laptop at home and do light coding on my iPad on the plane, but it looks to me like Apple won't let me. I worry that this is the future, that Apple will stop making machines that developers can actually use. I see a future where developers are told to go buy Sony hardware to install the iPad SDK on, since Apple has moved to making only closed consumer devices for Grandma and Aunt Jean.
