Today your clients are requiring that their website be more than just desktop compliant but that their website also provides a rich mobile experience that is optimized for smart-phones and tables. In this talk we will outline multiple HTML 5 Mobile Frameworks which use different approaches to responsive design layouts, how to take advantage of smart-phone features like touch, swipe, css3 and animations and best practices to display content across multiple screen sizes. In particular, we will share our experiences with Sencha, 320, Bootstrap, and Up. We will roll up our sleeves an review additional javascript for sliders and methods to display the same image at different screen sizes.

National Library of Medicine – Drug Information Portal Goes Live

In 2014, mobile internet usage will overtake desktop internet usage, and over half of mobile phone users use it to search for information. Thus it is important that federal agencies provide access to information in a mobile friendly interface. The National Library of Medicine is spearheading these efforts and have a large number of their sites created in a mobile friendly format. Mobomo talks Next Gen Federal Sites in April’s Tech Bisnow Newsletter

It’s annoying when you pull up a website on your iPhone but have to be the size of a mouse to actually read it. Mobomo (including founder Barg Upender, creative director Brian Lacey, and president Ken Fang) is trying to solve that one federal agency at a time. The Bethesda, Md.-based company is developing device agnostic websites and consumer apps for GSA, Department of Commerce, the International Trade Administration, and the National Library of Medicine. One of its first projects was building GSA’s USA Search iPhone app. Now Mobomo is seeing even more demand for mobile web despite shrinking budgets. The company is working on redeveloping an app gallery for GSA and re-writing Export.gov. Ken says the company’s commercial-inspired agile approach makes it affordable to agencies.

Barg launched Mobomo in 2009 after seeing a huge disruption by the iPhone in the device space. The company is now 39 people with revenue tripling in the last three years. The company also has commercial clients, including Votifi, which uses a Mobomo-built app to gauge public opinion. Barg (who also mentors other entrepreneurs) says Mobomo’s success has been by staying ahead of trends. For example, Brian is working on tweaking apps for the iPad’s latest retina display. It’s a challenge to keep up considering there are 99 different view ports on a smartphone. “In the old days there were just a few sizes. So we’re helping commercial companies and government agencies deal with this rate of innovation,” says Barg.

USA Search has a Drupal Module

USASearch is a program of the General Services Administration’s Office of Citizen Services and Information Technology (OCSIT) which offers free search services to any federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial government agency that can be used to search one or many sites. Mobomo’s Adam Frazin and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Tim Wood have officially released the USASearch Drupal module. This module is designed to take control of the default site search. It alters the default block and theme search forms and redirects the default drupal search paths (search, search/node/%) to enable your site to leverage the USASearch service.
